With this text, Antoine Choplin pays a very moving tribute to the Roma artist Ceija Sotjka, who died in 2013. With this text, Antoine Choplin pays a very moving tribute to the Roma artist Ceija Sotjka, who died in 2013. Ceija Sotjka, born in Austria in 1933, deported at the age of ten to Auschwitz, then Ravensbrück and Bergen-Belsen, illiterate then self-taught, learning to read and write around the age of forty, embarked a few years later on a formidable work of memory: First by writing - poems and prose - then, from her sixties onwards, by painting: more than a thousand works, inks, gouaches and acrylics on canvas or paper, exceptional testimony to her concentration camp experience, against oblivion and denial, and against the anti-Roma racism prevailing in Austria and Europe. This show, born from a book, respects the text, but is not a reading. It is an additional dimension to the work, which is itself at the crossroads of poetry, art book, novel, theatre, i.e. an incarnation, in space, of Ceija Stojka's great work, through the words of Antoine Choplin.
Antoine Choplin, whose discreet, sensitive writing, always marked by the greatest tact, regularly tackles the most tragic moments of 20th century history (Guernica, Chernobyl, Terezin, etc.), placing them each time at human level.
